Sailing on a GoBoat is about relaxing along scenic waterways. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, organising a bachelor or bachelorette party or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon with friends, it’s important to know the rules before you set sail.

Can you drink alcohol on a GoBoat?

In short, yes but responsibly.

GoBoat allows alcohol on board at all locations except Paddington as long as you consume it responsibly. Since the boats are self-drive electric boats, it means you are the Skipper so one person needs to stay sober and be the captain of your private boat.

Why responsible drinking matters on the water

Yes, GoBoat is relaxed, easy to drive and no license is needed but you are still the captain. When you’re cruising along London’s waterways, you are sharing the river with other boats, paddleboarders and wildlife. Feel free to slow down and take it all in!

A little sunshine, chilled drinks and surrounded by family and friends? What more could you ask for! GoBoat’s goal isn’t to restrict the atmosphere, but to protect it.

Are the rules the same for every location?

Canary Wharf - GoBoat location

GoBoat UK’s locations are:

Most locations allow moderate alcohol consumption, however there is one exception.

Paddington is an alcohol-free site

Due to the narrow waterways lined with narrowboats and low bridges, there is no alcohol allowed here. If you book at this site, enjoy the calm canal setting as you go through Little Venice, seeing places such as London Zoo.

Elevate the experience: Butler service in Canary Wharf

If you are setting sail from Canary Wharf, you can order drinks and snacks to your boat, using the QR on the centred picnic table. It is a seamless way to enjoy refreshments without the hassle. As always, the designated driver stays sober, but we have non-alcoholic drinks for them. The butler service just adds a premium touch to an already memorable self-drive experience.

How GoBoat promotes safe, enjoyable boating

GoBoat experiences are designed to be accessible to all, even if you have never been on a boat before or driven boat before. Before setting off, everyone receives:

  • A full safety briefing
  • A driving lesson
  • A map with the rules of the river, the route and the emergency phone number
  • Life jackets for children and the life jackets for adults are already on the boat.

The boats travel at a gentle speed; the staff monitor the water and can help you at any point throughout your journey.

Kingston and Thames Ditton - GoBoat locations

GoBoat is a popular choice for:

  • Birthdays
  • Hen and Stag celebrations
  • Anniversaries
  • Corporate socials
  • Summer Catch ups
  • Date night

Here’s what to keep in mind when you book:

  • Choose a designated driver

You can decide in advance, who you want to drive. Multiple people above the age of 18 can drive the boat, but all have to remain sober.

  • Keep it moderate

Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and take in all the picturesque views.

  • Avoid glass where possible

Plastic or reusable cups are a safer choice. If you bring glass, you can always provide a small bin bag for your rubbish.

  • Stay hydrated and enjoy a picnic

A picnic is encouraged. At Canary Wharf and Kingston locations, they have picnic packages from local restaurants.

The experience beyond the drinks

While questions about alcohol are common, most guests discover that a GoBoat experience is much more, it’s about:

  • Exploring hidden waterways
  • Taking in beautiful views
  • Enjoying the quiet moments away from the busy streets
  • Spending uninterrupted time with friends and family

In Canary wharf, you glide past modern architecture and waterside restaurants.

In Kingston and Thames Ditton, you’ll experience a more peaceful stretch of the river Thames surrounded by greenery and historic riverside views.

In Paddington, enjoy a calm escape through Little Venice, passing colourful narrowboats.

The bottom line

So, you can drink alcohol in moderation at all sites, except Paddington.

GoBoat offers a unique way to explore London from the water. Enjoy a self-drive electric boating experience that is relaxed, scenic and memorable.
