Let’s dive into what makes these electric boats so special, where to find them and why they should be at the top of your London to-do list.
GoBoat originated in Copenhagen in 2014 offering a sustainable and social experience on the water. GoBoat expanded to 17 locations worldwide such as Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Italy, USA, Colombia, Australia and the UK.
GoBoat London first opened in Paddington in 2017 by the founders Julian and Grant. And expanded to Kingston (2019), Canary Wharf (2021) and Thames Ditton (2023).
Each boat comfortably seats up to 8 people around a central table – perfect for all occasions. The boat travels at a gentle speed of around 4mph, making them safe and accessible for everyone, including first-time boaters. Best of all, no license or prior experience is required to captain your own GoBoat.
GoBoat Paddington
Nestled in Merchant Square, GoBoat Paddington is a hidden gem in the bustle of London. From here, you set off on Regent’s Canal, one of London’s most picturesque stretches of water. Cruising through Little Venice, you will pass beautifully decorated houseboats, waterside cafes, and leafy towpaths. The Maida Hill Tunnel offers a thrilling highlight – a 272-yard tunnel where echoes ounce of ancient brickwork and find yourself gliding through history.
Further along, you may catch a glimpse of Regent’s park or hear distant roars and calls from animals in London Zoo. By the time you reach your turn around point of Camden Lock it feels like you have taken a peaceful and serene shortcut through a part of the city that most people don’t see!
GoBoat Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf might be known for its tall and modern skyscrapers, but from the water it transforms into a peaceful playground. Departing from the docklands, your Canary Wharf GoBoat adventure glides past impressive modern architecture and quirky floating homes. This route is ideal for those who love seeing London’s futuristic side from a different perspective.
In your journey you will see Harbour Quay Gardens and the O2 Arena –beautiful views whilst you eat your floating picnic. There is also something so magical about boating beneath towering office buildings on the weekends when city’s financial hub is quiet.
GoBoat Kingston
If you are after a classic British scenery and a touch of royalty, GoBoat Kingston delivers. As you launch from Riverside Walk, this journey takes you along the Thames past weeping willows, up to historic locks and palaces, and gorgeous riverside homes. It’s a favourite for families, romantic afternoons, and groups celebrating with picnics and drinks.
The standout sight is undoubtedly Hampton Court Palace, which you will see on your 2-hour journey. Hampton Court Palace is a riverside icon from Tudor History. Gliding silently past you can almost imagine the courtly intrigues that once unfolded there. The river here is wide and calm, with plenty of open space for leisurely cruising.
GoBoat Thames Ditton
Perhaps the most tranquil of all GoBoat locations, Thames Ditton offers a peaceful, leafy escape just outside London. Departing from the boatyard, this stretch winds past Thames Ditton Island – a quirky residential island with close-knit boating community and on towards the majestic Hampton Court palace for your 1-hour journey or Teddington Lock for you 3-hour journey.
The beauty is the pace. The river feels quiet and unhurried with fewer boats and plenty of open water for relaxed steering. It’s perfect for those who want to savour the simple pleasure of boating without too many obstacles or narrow waterways.
What makes GoBoat such a brilliant day out isn’t just the beautiful scenery or the novelty of captaining your own electric boat, it’s those small, shared and unforgettable moments – the quiet admiring of the sunset over the water, the brief conspiratorial eye contact when a little drizzle appears. Silent cruising is about enjoying the journey without constant chatter, letting the natural and urban landscapes work their magic whilst you take it all in.
Whether it’s steering through Little Venice’s narrow bends, navigating Dockland’s futuristic canals, raising a glass near Hampton Court, or floating through the serenity of Thames Ditton, every GoBoat trip offers a chance to slow down, unwind and create wonderful stories.
